Wicklow wait on skipper

Image Wicklow skipper Paul Earls is a major doubt ahead of Sunday's Bank of Ireland Leinster SFC 1st round replay against Louth at Parnell Park.

The St Patrick's clubman sustained a foot muscle injury during the drawn game at Croke Park last weekend and is now rated a major doubt for the replay.

Earls started the game at left corner forward but dropped deep to allow wing back Leighton Glynn to push forward to good effect in the second half.

Earls, who also plays football with UCD, was replaced by fellow St Patrick's clubman John Slattery in the 65th minute after suffering the injury.

Meanwhile, Brendan O hAnnaidh is almost certainly ruled out of the meeting with the Wee County after he limped off in the 48th minute, with Paul Cronin coming on in his stead.

The Garden County are not expected to name their starting XV until Thursday evening.

Louth wing forward John O'Brien has been ruled out of Sunday's Bank of Ireland Leinster SFC 1st round replay against Wicklow after he suffered ankle ligament damage in the drawn game.

The Sean O'Mahony's clubman was taken off after just three minutes after going over on his ankle in the exciting 1-11 to 0-14 clash at Croke Park. The experienced Mark Stanfield came on in his place and hit a point from play.

Team captain Peter McGinnity, meanwhile, was set to go on his honeymoon but it is as of yet unclear whether he will amend his plans with the tie having to be replayed this coming weekend.

Wee County manager Eamonn McEneaney is expected to name his side on Wednesday evening.

Newsflash

The fear of being plunged into the Tommy Murphy Cup saw Wicklow produce an inspirational display against Louth in the drawn match. If the Garden County had taken their goal chances in the first half, then there would be no replay this Sunday. Tommy Gill proved that he is still one of the best forwards in the county as the Rathnew veteran kicked a number of excellent points, while the performance of Leighton Glynn at centre forward was one of the best in the position seen in a long time.

The question has been asked already, have Wicklow missed their chance? The answer will be revealed on Sunday. Brendan O’hAnnaidh is struggling to overcome a hamstring injury and he will be a huge loss for Mick O’Dwyer’s charges if he fails to come through. Louth have their injury concerns also as wing forward John O’Brien is definitely out. Captain Peter McGinnity was due to jet off on his honeymoon after he delayed the initial break to play in last Sunday’s match. Better news for manager Eamonn McEnaney is that long term injury victims Mark Stanfield, JP Rooney and John Neary, who were all introduced in the drawn game, came through unscathed. Parnell Park is the venue and a full capacity is expected to turn out.
